Highway Sound Wall Construction Project

Hauppauge, NY 11788

KELKEN Construction Systems supplied KELIGROUT high strength polyester resin anchoring material for this highway sound wall construction project in Hauppauge New York on Long Island.

Project: The Smithtown Bypass road is not limited access like an interstate, it has many cross streets, businesses as well as traffic lights.  Adjacent to portions of the roadway are exclusive upscale neighborhoods where the sound of traffic has become a problem for the residents.  The installation of a 22' tall sound wall is done to eliminate the traffic noise filtering through the area.

The sound wall construction begins with the caisson drilling form being inserted to a depth of 22 feet.  A caisson reinforcing cage of steel rebar is set inside the hole for added strength before the cement is poured in.  Once sufficiently cured, anchor holes in the concrete are drilled for the securing of the vertical support posts between the sound wall sections.  Once drilling is completed the holes require a thorough clean out with a wire brush and then debris is blown out with compressed air.  The properly prepared anchor holes are now ready to receive KELIGROUT and threaded anchors.

KELIGROUT™ INSTALLATION PROCEDURES

Drilling Holes:

Surface preparation is important in all chemical anchoring applications. Kelken Construction Systems recommends that all holes for anchors/rebar be made with air tools. Pneumatic drilling cleans as well as provides a rough texture inside the hole for easy bonding. If electric drilled, holes must be wired brushed in addition to air blowouts so that concrete dust and debris be cleared to allow for good bonding. When holes are DIAMOND CORED, the sides of the holes must be scored which allows the resin to develop a keying action to the concrete surface.

KELIGROUT can be used underwater with no adverse effects when properly installed. Caution should be taken to insure that the hole, after air drilling, has no debris and all anchors should be torqued to assure proper adhesion.

Mixing
Pour pre-proportioned hardening powder into can.

Stir thoroughly with anchor for 90 seconds or until thoroughly distributed throughout resin.

Pour mixed KELIGROUT directly into the bottom 1/3 of the prepared hole.

The rods are pushed to the bottom of the holes and rotated to assure total "wetting". They are left undisturbed until gel occurs, which happens within minutes to 1 hour depending on the ambient temperature at the time of installation.

After the material has cooled it will have 50 to 60% of its ultimate strength. Complete cure is assured within 24 hours.

Shelf Life
The shelf life of Keligrout is 6 months from date (our lot number) which is stamped on every can. Store Keligrout at 70°f out of direct sunlight. Storage temperatures should never exceed 85°f.

Hot Weather
Keep Keligrout cool until immediately before using. An insulated cooler (and a little ice on really hot days) will do a good job. Do not let cans get wet.
Keep containers of Keligrout out of direct sunlight.

Cold Weather
Always use two containers of hardener when temperature is below 45°f.
Keep Kelianchor, rebar or coilrod and Keligrout warm (70°f) until immediately before using.

A 100 watt bulb enclosed in a lockup box or insulated cooler works well at the job site. Material can also be warmed under a compressor engine's cover or in a truck cab.

Caution
Solvents for Keligrout are highly flammable and volatile. DO NOT SMOKE OR USE NEAR OPEN FLAME OR SPARKS.

Do not use Keligrout in drilled or formed holes that are over 1/4" larger than anchor's diameter without contacting Kelken.
